Philanthropy is the concept of voluntary giving by an individual or group to promote the common good. The word "philanthropy" also includes grants of money given by foundations to nonprofit organizations and contributions of an individual or group to other organizations that in turn work for the causes of poverty or social problems, improving the quality of life for all citizens.
There are many ways to become involved with philanthropy. Whether you are the trustee of a small family foundation, the CEO of a large corporate giving program, or an individual interested in giving back to your community, there are ways to infuse philanthropy into your everyday life.

Community Foundations Community foundations are publicly supported foundations operated by, and for the benefit of, a specific community or geographic region. Public foundations pool their funds as well but their grantmaking interests may extend beyond the "community".

Family Foundations At a legal level, family foundations are really "private foundations" since the Internal Revenue Code makes its categorizations based only on the composition of the asset base and its intended use for charitable purposes. The philanthropic sector has always distinguished between family foundations and private foundations because so much of our philanthropic heritage and current practice has taken root in a family’s decision to commit some part of its wealth to philanthropy.

Independent Foundations Even if established by the generosity of individuals or families, independent foundations are distinguished by the fact that they are generally no longer governed by the original donors or their descendants. Their boards are self-perpetuating bodies, usually composed of community, business and academic leaders.
