STORYTELLING AS BEST PRACTICE

Nonprofits and foundations sometimes overlook their most compelling method for demonstrating how they improve lives: a good story. Terrence McNally, one of the nation's leaders in advising organizations on how to develop compelling communications, will demonstrate how stories - in speeches, conversations, and documents – can strengthen your organization, engage your audience, and advance your mission.

SESSION 1

GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT AS A GRANTMAKING CHOICE

How can grantmakers expand their thinking around providing general operating support for nonprofit organizations? When does it make sense? Are there times when it isn’t a smart move? Courtney Bourns of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, will share discoveries from GEO’s work on general operating support and lead a peer-to-peer dialogue reflect on the ideas presented.

SESSION 2 THE ART AND SCIENCE OF SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING

Join Lucia Petrie, former Vice Chancellor of Philanthropy, UW Milwaukee; Mary Louise Mussoline, Senior Director of Development Milwaukee Art Museum; and Mary McCann, Partner McDonald Schaefer Group LLC as they share their experience in developing, implementing and completing highly successful fundraising campaigns. Doris Heiser, Director of Donor Services for the Greater Milwaukee Foundation will moderate the session on what works, what doesn’t, and what everyone who is responsible for resource development needs to know.

GIVING TRENDS: STRAIGHT TALK FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES

How will the downturn in the economy affect the capacity of Wisconsin’s nonprofit organizations to respond to community needs? David Holmes, Regional Training Coordinator for the Foundation Center, will explore how foundation giving is being affected by changes in the U.S. economy and what the future may hold. Local grantmakers Lisa Hiller of the Helen Bader Foundation, Cecelia Goreof the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation, and Jim Marks of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation will react to these trends and practices within their own institutions.

FROM INSIGHT TO ACTION: EVALUATING FOR IMPACT
Mark Kramer of FSG Social Impact Advisors will share the latest approaches to evaluation emerging in the field of philanthropy. Mark will provide guidance for grantmakers on specific ways to move from ideas to action, applying these evaluation techniques to make better informed decisions and to become more effective in achieving social impact.
SESSION 5 DEVELOPING HIGH POWER BOARDS

Can every nonprofit board be a “high power” board? Absolutely! David Renz, Director of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership will discuss strategies that nonprofit boards are using to make the shift from passive stewardship to active leadership as board members recognize that board work is critical to mission attainment. The result is an infectious energy that raises commitment and enjoyment level – and organizational impact!

SESSION 6

THE PROMISE AND PITFALLS OF COLLABORATION
As resources grow scarcer and individual and community challenges more complex, organizations often need to join forces to make headway. Carol Lukas, President of Fieldstone Alliance, will examine the promise, pitfalls, potential, and steps inherent in managing complex organizational relationships. through review of research and practice, exploration of a case story, and reactions by Gil Llanas of Northwestern Mutual Foundation and Jayne Thoma of the United Way of Waukesha.

Doug White, Senior Governance Consultant for BoardSource and author of Charity on Trial: What You Need to Know Before You Give, will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with managing relationships between nonprofit executives, board members, and funders to maximize impact and build capacity in a changing world.
