Deepening the Dialogue
In response to feedback that DFW's conference provides a unique opportunity for colleagues to talk about their successes, share challenges or ask vexing questions, DFW has designed a breakfast for attendees to connect with colleagues around key issues.  Grantmakers will host tables for small group conversations for family foundations, community foundations and corporate grantmakers in addition to issues such as education, the environment and foundation administration.

GIVING IN TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES
Melissa Brown, Managing Editor of Giving USA, will present key findings from Giving USA 2009: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2008 to explore what giving looks like during a recession and how it is affecting charitable organizations.  In discussing emerging trends likely to affect giving in 2010, Ms. Brown will offer strategies for how the social sector can maintain its viability in the face of various financial challenges.  Giving USA is the seminal publication of The Giving USA Foundation, which publishes data and trends about charitable giving.

Expanding Your Reach: Engaging Your Board
Your board can be among your most powerful assets.  Too often though the board doesn't want to be involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task.  The result is that many board members do nothing or very little when it comes to fundraising.  To address this challenge, your board members may need more clear direction and guidance about how to participate so it feels rewarding and an integral part of their board involvement.  In this interactive session with Lori Jacobwith you will learn some concrete tools and techniques that may help make fundraising a rewarding experience for you and your board.

SESSION 2

What Do We Say?
From chance encounters in the grocery store to postings on your website, this session will address how best to manage conversations with grantees in this time when nonprofit stress and anxiety seem at an all time high, and the financial answers aren't clear.  Marcia Sharp, Principal, Millennium Communications will present on the basic do's and don'ts of responding during crisis with specific guidance on: developing messages, using all channels to get out the messages; and sending signals--it's not only what you say but how you act.

Rethinking Foundation Life Span
As foundations struggle with reduces assets during a tough economy, what are the considerations regarding the current state of foundations and charitable life span?  With a range of strategies to consider from perpetuity to limited-time existence, how should foundations approach their asset base and what are the implications?  Dr. Francie Ostrower of the University of Texas at Austin will present cases that highlight the rationales for various longevity plans and their implications for issues ranging from finance and investment to mission, grantmaking policies, and governance to broaden our understanding of foundations and their possibilities.

Community Foundations
Community Foundations: National Standards and Wisconsin Peer Review
The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Program was established in 2000 in cooperation with the Council on Foundations, and a new recertification process will begin in 2010.  DFW has operated a peer review program in tandem with the national program.  Diane Miller, National Standards Coordinator for the Council on Foundations, will discuss the new national standards requirements and the resulting preparations for community foundations legal, ethical and effective operational practices.  Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin Executive Director Jean Tehan will present a local perspective on what certification means for community foundations.

Corporate Grantmakers

Leveraging Corporate Resources in Tough Times
In today's economy, business resources for corporate philanthropy programs are being stretched and in some cases diverted away from community investments.  How can corporate grantmakers remain strategic in tough times?  This session will identify emerging trends in corporate giving and highlight turn-key options to support the nonprofit sector during a weak economy.  Changing Our World's Managing Director of Corporate Social Engagement, DeShele Dorsey, will engage participants in dialogue around how corporate grantmakers can harness alternative resources and work with other funders to help nonprofits better meet community needs.

WORKING WITH COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS
Now more than ever the partnership between community foundations and private foundations is critical to sustaining our communities.  Join Dori Kreiger, Managing Director - Family Philanthropy Services for the Council on Foundations, and your grantmaking peers for a lively discussion on real case scenarios that highlight successes and challenges of these unique partnerships.  Find out how to leverage your grant dollars and accomplish your goals by working with community foundations.
